Current Reads

Greg is my International Book Drop supplier - He always manages to send me a big box of books just when I need them the most. Here is what I'm reading right now ...

"MWF Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a Best Friend" - Rachel Bertsche. I'm actually going to do a little write-up of this book this week. As someone who has uprooted her life and moved 5,500 miles away to a new country, the quest for friendship is ever-present.

Taken from her website: "When Rachel Bertsche first moves to Chicago, she’s thrilled to finally share a zip code, let alone an apartment, with her boyfriend. But shortly after getting married, Bertsche realizes her new life is missing one thing: friends. Sure, she has plenty of BFFs—in New York and San Francisco and Boston and Washington DC. Yet in her adopted hometown, there’s no one to call at the last minute for girl-talk over brunch or a reality TV marathon over a bottle of wine. Taking matters into her own hands, Bertsche develops a plan: she’ll go on fifty-two friend-dates, one per week for a year, in hopes of meeting her new Best Friend Forever."

And Jhumpa Lahiri's "Unaccustomed Earth." I adore this author. "Interpreter of Maladies" was one of my most treasured books when I first read it, and I was so happy to see this new(ish) collection in the Book Drop box. I haven't been able to put it down since I started it on Friday and am already sad to think that soon I'll be reaching the last page.

It feels so good to read again! I know that sounds strange, but books here are expensive and hard to come by. Actually the Washington Post just published an interesting article about CFK's attempt to revive the domestic publishing industry (ironic since they actually rely on Brasil to print local currency). While I managed to bring down several of my favorite books over the years, it's always refreshing to have a new stack waiting for me to discover. Nothing like a good book on a sunny Spring day.

Welcome to the 90s, Mr. Banks

Or let's try welcome to 2011, Paige.

After 7 long years with my beloved PowerBook G4, she's been pushed into retirement. Let's just call it the Seven Year Itch. I actually didn't have much of a problem working with Microsoft Office 2004 and an OS that was at least 3 generations behind. I'm a loyal kind of girl and I couldn't find too many good reasons to break up with my perfectly functional - if not a little battered - PowerBook.

We went off to college together, typing up philosophy reports and sending emails while downloading music illegally (what was that program called that soon after inception became illegal/defunct?), clogging the hard drive with thousands of pictures from football tailgates and theme parties. She even came with me to Argentina, where I spent 6 months drinking Malbec and occasionally studying at UCA. Through thick and thin we were in it together.

Then I realized that when you want to update your Skype and a scary message that screams "New software not supported on system architecture" you're in trouble. What does that even mean? Architecture? But isn't this a computer? It happened again with Photoshop, and after some file conversion issues ... I reached a boiling point.

It's not you, really. It's me. We've grown apart. You don't satisfy my needs anymore. Sure, we've been though so much together, the good times and the bad, the late night thesis sessions and the compilation of photos for my "inspiration" folder. But I feel like we're just two ships passing in the night these days. I can't take you anywhere - literally, if I unplug you you throw a fit and turn off within 25 minutes - so I feel stifled. Time to move on.

Now I'm typing away on a MacBook Pro from last year that my Dad parted with in order to maintain my sanity. I feel like a modern woman of the 21st century now! Backlit keyboard! Glossy and sharp display! Skype for the new age.

I've hit a little bit of a roadblock, however. File and data transfer from seven years together. It's the equivalent of cleaning out "your stuff" from the house after a divorce. I definitely should have written my name in my books! (Annie Hall reference, anyone?) Despite what you might think, I'm not the most tech-savvy girl on the block. Today I've already had about three temper tantrums trying to get the damn Bluetooth to work!!!!

Maybe these are the consequences for breaking off a relationship so late into the game. My little PowerBook is going to make me work if I want to leave her. And that's ok with me. It's only fair to give her the respect she deserves. We catapulted ourselves into young adulthood together, after all.

It's been a good run.

RIP 2004 - 2011

I'm Published! (weeeee!)

I guess it's obvious that I've never done this before, because I'm so giddy about my little article being published in the paper where I work (selling ads, doing commercial stuff. Although my real dream would be to get into editorial .... I love to write).

It's a review/write-up of the Oasis Collections Clubhouse, a new posh playground nestled in the middle of Palermo Soho. It's part of a little series I'm going to be doing which covers the upscale and luxe spots and services in Buenos Aires that aren't always covered by the paper.

Here is a link - Please read & enjoy and fawn over my budding journalistic skills. (Just kidding)

While you're at it - Check out my favorite Weekly News Roundup (even funnier this week)
and I know Easter is over but you have to see this photographic essay about the Holy Week events that go on at Tierra Santa (Holy Land), Buenos Aires's religious theme park. Yes you read that right.
