Fashion Footwear Faux Pas

Everyone thinks that Argentines are incredibly chic, stylish and elegant, but I would just like to shed light on a trend here that needs to be removed from life immediately.

In general, Argentines (women AND men) love Nike. Nike shoes, clothes, running gear, t-shirts, sneakers, etc. They just eat it right up. Which is cool. I'm all about Nike and I support it. Even though here it is pronounced exactly at it looks: Nike, as if it rhymed with "like." No thank you.

Porteños love those strange, amphibious looking, split-toe sandals that you can't walk 3 blocks down Av. Santa Fe without seeing at least 10 pairs of them. They come in all different kinds of colors, patterns, are worn with socks, without socks, skirts, jeans, shorts, leggings ... You name it, they do it.

Please, would someone tell me why they love these things so much ???

Nike Human Race 10K

On Saturday we ran the Nike+ Human Race 10k, which took place simultaneously in 30 cities around the world - New York, LA, Singapore, London, Berlin, Rome, Seoul, and Rio de Janeiro, among others.

Buenos Aires was one of the cities with the most runners - more than 10,000 - and it was really an incredible event. The weather was perfect, the course took us through downtown Buenos Aires and Puerto Madero, and it was definitely an amazing experience.

I blame the slow people who clogged the first couple of kilometers by walking for our slow start and maybe extra minute that I have arbitrarily added on to our time, but I can't actually prove that. Oh well. I still like to blame the slow people who I almost tripped over and/or banged with my elbows. We finished in about 56 minutes, which isn't bad, but it is 1 minute slower than our last 10k. I guess that I also went running ONCE in 3 weeks before the race had something to do with that. I really want to be able to run a 10k in 50 minutes one day, so I had better get my butt to the gym.

But it was cool when I crossed the finish line and some random journalist, or just random creepo, took my picture and asked me some questions and whatnot. Asked me if I was a professional runner ... what ? Um, no thanks but that would be cool. I forgot to ask her for what publication she writes so I will have to google myself until I get to the bottom of it.

I will put up more pictures soon but here are a couple from pre-and post-race. We were lucky enough to be able to go down to the marina at Puerto Madero and hang out on a boat to celebrate the race before heading back home. Twas a good little day.

A Day in the Life of Pagina ...

Thanks to the suggestion by a lovely cupcake named Margaret I will now be working on a lovely photo documentation of a day in the life of Paige/Pilar/Pagina so you all can see what my crazy life in Buenos Aires is like. Get excited ! Or, not.

Spring Forward. Maybe

One of the first headlines on the news this morning was "Cambia La Hora?" - "Time Change?"

No one knows if the whole Spring Forward/Fall Back thing will be happening in BA this year. They're just not sure. Is this a joke ? I also heard that some provinces aren't in agreement with the whole moving the time 1 hour ahead, and have refused to partake ... if it even happens.

I hope we can solve this big, bad mystery that will surely be at the top of the news hour all day until the geniuses can get to the bottom of it.

On a brighter note, I am off to get a delicious "American" brunch at this little place off of Av. Las Heras to celebrate a birthday ... Please give me fried potatoes and onions and BACON please.

Maradona to the world: "Suck it."

That's professional.

After a rather boring victory over Uruguay last night, Argentina secured their spot in the World Cup after some speculation that it might not have been a possibility. Given that they have been playing pathetically and that Diego Maradona is perhaps the most useless coach of all time, I wasn't really going to be surprised if they didn't make it to the World Cup. However, last night they managed to squeeze a little goal in there (by accident?) and beat Uruguay 1-0. I was secretly hoping Uruguay would win the game, basically because I'm evil. but it's fine.

Anyway. After the game, during the press conference with the media, Maradona took to his little podium with his fat little face and literally told anyone who didn't believe in him or the national team, to suck it. And to "keep on sucking it." This was on national tv. Great. Very professional.

Maradona is an embarrassment to Argentina and to their National Selection. Maybe instead of doing bellyflops in the rain on the soccer field (post-game against Peru), he could put the snacks down and actually put his brain into how to coach the team. It will be a miracle if they do well in the World Cup.

I love Maurice Sendak and have been dying to see what the movie would be like. Now I have to wait forever. Ok, not forever, but we basically get the idea right ?

If This is for Real, I Am Moving ...

I think the Kirchners are the most insane, wacky, and scary people in politics (Ok, excluding North Korea, among others... but anyway).

After 20 straight hours of deliberation in the Senate the " Ley de Medios K " was passed without any modification whatsoever. In short, this will give the Government complete control over the means of communication, all masked behind the facade of " democracy " and other terms that have nothing to do with the reality. In this law, 60% of the TV content must be Argentine. The Kirchners are forcing the Clarin Group (one of the more important groups in Latin America) to sell off the majority of its holdings. This means it will be even easier for the Kirchners to buy them all up at incredibly low prices. All of these lovely things don't make me feel any better knowing that Cristina is like BFF with Chavez.

On a brighter note, I was brought two beautiful little bouqets of jasmine to help my recovery process. They smell amazing and have already brightened up this gloomy Saturday.

I couldn't be happier.

So I have been sick since Tuesday.

Good side:
I finished the Twilight series. Vampire-y.
I have slept enough hours to recover from my months of exhaustion.
Breakfast and lunch in bed every day ! I try not to think about crumbs in the sheets.


Bad side:
No Indian food.
Nothing spicy.
Bella isn't here to be my guard dog (she always sleeps at my feet when I'm sick until I get better)
No Deb to be my faithful google medical researcher.

Finally feeling better and am praying that I can enjoy part of the 3 day weekend that awaits.
