MEOW I'm a Water Tiger - I want to be an Explorer !

Tiger people are difficult to resist, for they are magnetic characters and their natural air of authority confers a certain prestige on them. They are tempestuous yet calm, warm-hearted yet fearsome, courageous in the face of danger yet yielding, soft and mysterious. They enjoy a life full of challenges and unexpected events, like visiting unusual places and meeting interesting or outstanding people. Other people in their area are easily attracted by the tiger's enthusiasm and way of life. Tigers find pleasure in the unpredictable, and while other people would rather make a backward step, they are not afraid to explore the new and unusual. But it is not that simple to interest the Tiger. What they really need is first-hand experience. Usually open and frank, these people are likely to withdraw and can be aggressive when trapped. As soon as the Tiger has regained their sense of security their confidence also returns, enabling them to set out once more. These people usually tend to trust their instincts, though there is another side of their personality, which assesses situations thoughtfully before they launch any actions. Their friends usually secretly admire their determination and optimism, though sometimes may find it complicated to share the Tiger's enthusiasm and can be pushed away and left behind. Although Tigers can be courageous and generous friends, if they are not able to achieve what they want, they can be inflexible and self-centered. So if your friend was born in the year of the Tiger, there will be highs and lows in your friendship, but the friendship itself will remain firm.

Ideal jobs for tigers include entrepreneur, military officer, politician, musician, writer, poet, artist, theater director, biological and environmental engineer, stockbroker, athlete, film star, trade union leader, company director, stunt person, explorer and lawyer.

Happy Chinese New Year ! Yesterday in Barrio Chino in Belgrano there was quite the festive celebration, aka Argies clogging the streets and calling spring rolls "Chinese empanadas" -- annnnyyyyway

I am a Tiger. Tigre. Tigressssssss. I think this is a pretty damn good representation of my insanity and craziness:

Tiger (Yang, 3rd Trine, Fixed Element Wood): Unpredictable, rebellious, colorful, powerful, passionate, daring, impulsive, vigorous, stimulating, sincere, affectionate, humanitarian, generous. Can be restless, reckless, impatient, quick-tempered, obstinate, selfish.

I also like wood. And how it smells. So that has to be a good thing, I guess.

As always, need to get back on the blog train. Foot update: 1000000% better, also have lovely bilirubin levels and a cholesterol level of 143. I like that it's 143 because it's what I always say to Hernball when we have sassy gchat sessions while we're both working. Lylas.

On Wendesday we're doing the despedida for Agu and he is going to make some delicious tacos at my house, after relaxing poolside first. Hoorah ! I am excited but I am starting to freak out that he is going to Spain for 4 months because then I will be in charge of like, 1/3 of Road. Well I guess it's really only 1/4 but it feels like more because it covers a lot of bases. Meh.

I painted my nails a very 80s neony orange pink and I must say, I love it.

Last night Katie and I saw Changeling and then made some delicious Indian food. I must say, NO ONE PREPARED ME FOR CHANGELING. So intense, graphic and violent. It was an incredibly well done film, high five Clint Eastwood, but no one told me to expect such intensity. Also I'm sorry but I realllllly don't like Angelina Jolie. She does fit the profile of a late 1920s kind of aesthetic, but I just wanted to shove BigMacs in her face and tell her to stop being so annoying.

The dinner was heaven. All you need to do is gather a pound + of fresh veg ( we used spinach, peas, green beans, green pepper, broccoli, carrots ) and throw it into a pot after sauteeing chopped onion, garlic and ginger in oil. You dump that all in with curry, turmeric, coriander, and whatever, with some coconut milk and let it sit for 3o minutes. VOILA. It all emerges in a delicious comfort food goodness that makes Indian-esque cooking at home very accessible.

Oh man now I want some Indian bahhhhhhh.

That's all for now I am going to go lay face down on my bed and eavesdrop on my crazy neighbor lady who seems to enjoy walking from one end of her apartment to another in high heels.

Hahahah

The New York Times managed to make me laugh this morning

14 January 2009

Hmm

Sometimes I forget to close my curtains and then when I remember I wonder if my faraway neighbors enjoy seeing me sweep the floor in my underwear while I watch America's Next Top Model and/or sing Shakira songs in an incredibly demonstrative way. Hm. Oh well.

I went to the gym for the first time in like 90 years today, but it was the gym that is closest to my apartment, not the one that I had grown to love so fondly. I felt cramped and lost and missed the familiar faces - all of the sweaty men who look like they're inflated while they lift free weights, the random Brasilian looking woman who would show up 20 minutes before the gym closed to talk on her cellphone while she did just one weight machine with like 30% of effort ( the machine that supposedly works the inner thighs, not only do you look like a freak while you do it but I doubt that it really works since I have been hanging out there for like the past year ), and the crazy old lady who has some seriously insane muscles. Le sigh. I might have to go back for a visit, just for old time's sake.

Foot Update. Third World Dermatologist lady is a genius. I love her. I worship her. So far so good and all I am hearing from the Indian are snide remarks about how much better American doctors are than the Argies. I just want my little footsie back and I want it to roam free in flipflop land.

I'm sooooooooo sleepy. I also had a Cuarto de Libra con the Queso today for lunch and mmmm it was delicious. I had been up and at 'em for about 6 hours and felt that I deserved some capitalistic cholesterol after spending the morning among poverty and humility in Boca. Then I had to call Fibertel and get internet fixed - apparently between 48 and 72 hours after they install, they cut your service so you can call and confirm it ? Or something ? I didn't really understand and I had to have Javier re-explain to me, but the second time around I was just pretending. The problem I have is that sometimes people don't realize that I'm not Argentine at first because my accent is pretty good, but then I speak and something really pathetic comes out of my mouth, or I stumble over a word, or they just think I'm kind of an idiot and well, I just hope they don't judge me too much. But thanks Jav, thanks to you I am surfing the 'net 24/7. Yeehaw.

I cannot believe it's already Thursday tomorrow !! Then on Friday we're doing another asado which makes my panza soooo happy. The next weekend I think we're going to Mar del Plata for some serious beach time with Lu and try to avoid the insane amount of people guaranteed to be there. Fingers crossed.

OOOOOOOH SNAP the new 90210 is on and I haven't seen it in 05948508454 years ... OK BYE

Internet Love

No, I am not referring to e-harmony.com, I am referring to the simple and pure love that one experiences when given the amazing gift of wireless internet access. 'Tis blissful.

Anyway here I am sitting on my nice little bed, looking out my big window and watching Law&Order. Life is good. Minus the fact that I think I will have to get my foot amputated this week. Seriously. It actually is awful and I don't know why it makes me embarrassed to talk about it. Basically I have a gross thing growing on my foot which makes it basically impossible to wear high heels, sandals, or any shoe that shows the top of my foot because it looks like I was attacked with some weird melting device, or something like that. Tomorrow I'm seeing a dermatologist and I hope she has the cure, because I am worried about my little footsie and would like it to be attractive again, instead of repel people.

Hmmm so what has happened in the past few weeks ? Quite a bit, actually. I came home from Christmas in the States and had one last little hurrah before starting work. Pinamar was great, I went with the Indian and 4 of his best friends who I know really well. We had a great time, despite the windy and chilly nights. Also, considering that where we stayed was pretty rustic, it was still an awesome trip. After traveling quite a bit with Andrés, I am used to the non 5-Star Hotel lifestyle, which I have found actually makes trips more fun. We've stayed in isolated military cabins in Las Leñas, bare-bones hostels without real showers near the Bolivian border, and this time around rented out an unfinished duplex that didn't have hot water or a refrigerator. It was a blast. I'll spare the details since they aren't that exciting, but we ended up there because the other guys had arrived before we did, and had already reserved and paid ( up front ) for this pretty blah apartment/hotel thing near downtown Pinamar. Instead of renting a cute little house for the 6 of us, which would have been idea, we ended up with few options and not a lot of time. No matter. The weather was great, the company even better, and I was just a happy lady to be by the sea.

Work, as I have said, has been great. A little overwhelming though, since there is a lot to learn and I think most of it will be done sort of on-the-go. Luckily I think I can be quick on my feet, and my coworkers are so great that it's not like I feel weird asking for help. I really like getting into work and hanging out in the office, and tomorrow is the first Activity that I planned for the Roadies. We're going to the Museo de Artes Plasticas ... Basically it's an activity that seemed like something I'd want to go to, so I hope people actually go. Whatever. There is the first Wine Tasting class that night though so I'm not counting on a huge crowd.

What else ... I love being peaceful in my little apartment and hanging out and being boring. I really need to start getting the gym back into my schedule but for now, I'm just going to enjoy unwinding while I'm at home.

In April I will be back in the States for a few weeks getting my visa paperwork done ... Something I'm excited about but also nervous for too. Any long-term life interruption feels strange. But I'm hoping to do some babysitting or substitute teaching while I'm home to make some extra money.

Ok back to the boob tube ... Not feeling inspired or witty

MIRACLE !!!!

My apartment now has internet.
Praise the Lord.
Hallelujah.
I am now a happy woman.

MA CHE CHE

This makes me very very upset. Prices rising for the Subte and the Colectivo. What was once $0,90 will now be $1,10 of my hard earned MONEDAS

F this.

Friday

So life is great. I also always have these profound or hilarious thoughts on the Subte as to what I will write for you guys, but then by the time I get to the office they have flown out of my head and have been replaced with the first day´s cup of coffee.

Oh well.

Last night was the first Road Welcome Dinner, every month we do a dinner for the new people who have arrived for the program, and it was really fun despite the intense humidity. Grilled pizza and lots of beer were abundant and I must say it was quite entertaining to meet all of the characters. Some are only here for a month so I guess I will have to get used to the constant rotation, but that isn´t necessarily a bad thing.

Also I highly recommend anyone to NOT go to the Hospital Rivadavia if you are in Buenos Aires. It is this giant compound that has these amazing old antique buildings ... that haven´t been touched or renovated in like 100 years. It´s now a public hospital and it made me sad to see such disrepair. Also it´s disgusting. I would never want to have birth there after walking through the maternity ward. Sorry that sounds mean, but when there are signs in the hallways saying Please do not etch the new baby´s name into the paint, proud new grandparents/uncles&aunts/relatives, because it´s so costly and difficult for us to have to paint over it. Below the sign were hundreds of names that had been etched and carved into the paint on the walls. Seriously, who does that ?

Ok so I guess that´s it, wow I really have nothing exciting to write about. It´s hot, I have a/c, I get free cable in my apartment which rules, will finally have internet soon ( I still pray ) and I love my job and basically am a happy little camper. I also need to get some things to decorate my apartment this weekend. My wall is feeling a little sad.

Life Observations

Ok so I am in a good mood today but I thought I would complain about people on the Subte anyway.

Why don´t Argies understand the concept of ¨stand right, walk left¨???? When I am going up the escalator, I speed walk and I really hate when people just stand there on the left side like that is a socially acceptable behavior. I am in a hurry. You might not be, because your bakery just happens to be on vacation FOR TWO MONTHS, but I have places to go. Please get out of my way. Thank you very much.

Also please don´t shove your sweaty body onto the train when there really isn´t a lot of room. If you must, that is fine, but at least say ¨excuse me¨or something along those lines. The silent shove siege that ensues if you do not is just unbearable. Then I will proceed to give you a mean look and roll my eyes because I think that you actually care about my opinion of you. I will also criticize your cheap suit in my mind and laugh because you also have your cartilage pierced. And are a man.

I also hate Fibertel. I need internet and little Alejandro never called me back like he had promised. If everyone weren´t named Alejandro I might have a chance at tracking him down again but we´ll see how that goes. For now I´ll just enjoy the free cable that I´m getting. And by free I mean it´s probably not because someone had paid for it to be installed. At least I can wake up for work by watching ¨The Nanny ¨- who doesn´t love waking up to Fran Drescher´s voice ?

That´s all for now.

Apparently

I look and act like a bag of potatoes while I sleep, so I´m told.

Lovely.

I Am Alive

I have been so horrible about being in touch with everyone, checking emails and obsessively looking at the blog, so I suppose this is proof that I am not dead or missing somewhere on a remote beach ( although I would like that to be the case, the beach part, not the dead part ) ...

Happy 2009 ! I am back from a wonderful little Pinamar escape that was full of sun and all of the good things that come along with being at the beach. Today is my first day at work and I am in a considerably great mood, despite the fact that I haven´t slept more than 8 hours in 2 nights and it´s Monday. Who would have thought ?

Anyway, I will get back on track with my random thoughts and posts about nothing. It´s 95 degrees today and I´m just trying not to melt when I walk outside. It looks like I´ll be taking a quick dip in the pool before I pass out in my giant nap I have planned for this afternoon starting promptly at 6.30 pm

Pictures and updates to follow. I am also looking for future visitors so if anyone wants to plan a trip to Buenos Aires that would be, um, great.
