At Home With Wendy Burden - NYT

I absolutely loved this article in today's New York Times about Wendy Burden, a descendant of the Vanderbilt family who has just published a book "Dead-End Gene Pool." Not only is her house beautifully decorated, she also has a resilient sense of humor that has given her a unique perspective on growing up in the lap of luxury. She is neither full of resentment nor trying to come across as another victim of the silver spoon lifestyle. I would love to have a house full of heirlooms from wacky family members and plenty of stories to go along with them. Maybe when I'm home I'll pick up a copy of her book and indulge.

Below are some more photos and some hilarious quotations from the article.

“My whole life, all I do is arrange things,” she says. “I can’t see three rocks without putting them on top of each other.”

“I don’t want this to be seen like a poor little rich girl thing,” she says. “I don’t see myself as having been mistreated, the neglected childhood. I had a great time. Can you imagine growing up with all that stuff?”

Bon Voyage ...

In just a couple of days we're off for the good old USA. I cannot wait!

Having quite the tough time coming up with my packing list. Aside from the bundles of gifts I'm bringing home for Deb, Mere and the like, I'm aiming to keep things minimal just for the sake of it. But I'm such a horrible packer - If only I could be less merciful when it comes to abandoning my wardrobe when traveling. At least I won't need a winter jacket. I always replay the scene from Seinfeld when George and Jerry head to L.A. for the weekend: The Trip (video clip)

Lots to get done in the next couple of days. Man, once again I have a hard time thinking of fun things to write about. What's wrong with me? I need to upload pictures of my beautiful orchid that greets me every morning.

Any packing advice would be helpful. This assumes that you know what I have in my wardrobe but isn't essential. Help me be minimalistic but chic and fabulous at the same time!

Autumn

Well it's technically Autumn in Buenos Aires, and on Sunday Mother Nature surprised us with a daylong downpour that was the perfect excuse to loaf around the house, have brunch at MALBA and snuggle up in sweatpants. Sometimes I just love a rainy, rainy day. The sun decided to come back and it's a brilliant day in Argentina. It's so invigorating, especially when the early mornings are crisp and even a bit chilly in the shade.

I have been running around like a wild woman trying to get some last minute visa renewal paperwork together. Definitely not the best activity for someone like myself, who tends to "drown herself in a glass of water" according to Josey. However things went rather smoothly yesterday and I'm glad that the paper-collecting part seems to be over. All I pray for is that my passport is able to be returned to me by Friday before we come back to the US !!!

Easter is going to be a wonderful visit home. I cannot wait to see all of my friends and family - it's been at least 8 months for most of them. The house will be finished, I will frolic with Bella, and once again I can eat Indian buffets for $7.95 and feast until my heart's content. Pottery Barn and Anthropologie Home will also benefit from my presence - what economic setback?

Last night José and I celebrated the 1 year anniversary of our first date - I cannot believe how fast the time has flown. This has been the most incredible year, and definitely my happiest to date. It's so amazing how your outlook changes when you wake up happy every morning without fail. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I could not ask for anything better. Hooray!

Anyway, I'm off. Time to get out of the house and bask in the sunshine before getting ready to head back to DC!

Rather Uninspired

Even though I have had plenty of free time lately I haven't been too inspired to write anything whimsical or fun detailing my rather silly life. Perhaps because I am currently spending my energy being angry with LAN airline that thought delaying tonight's flight by 4 hours would be a good idea. Now I am here drinking my mini-bottle of Malbec and watching a show about the world's smallest girl, this adorable 16 year old who lives in India and is the size of a 6 month old. I swear she's the cutest thing ever - and I hesitate to say that because I understand she isn't an infant - but she has the biggest smile and just seems like a typical teenage girl. And she lives in India which clearly gives her 1,000 bonus points in my book.

Today I did more home improvements and a whole lot of nothing. Not what I would ideally do on a Saturday but I guess everyone has their lazy days (or weeks). I cannot wait to be back home in DC with Bella the most beautiful standard poodle on the face of the earth, eating curry and cupcakes and shopping at Anthropologie and the Paper Source. I miss America.

Bueno. Two photos from the now defunct domino magazine (such a travesty) that inspire me to do a complete home-office overhaul, and an inviting dinner party arrangement.

Hmph

I'm deciding that I won't elaborate on why I am in an awful mood, especially because last night I had so much fun with some sassy ladies all from the US who are in BA for various reasons. My guacamole turned out wonderfully and we spent a great evening laughing so hard my ribs started hurting. Then this morning I met with this absolutely incredible woman who was one of the first real execs at AOL Time Warner and is married to the CEO of Telefonica - she also happens to share a love for West Elm (we have the same zebra pillow), Cartier, and chic linen blazers.

Anyway, we had a great chat and I am now inspired by her success and I basically just want to emulate her. Seriously this woman does it all - she traveled back and forth between New York twice a month for work until she was 8 months pregnant. And she's nice, funny, witty and beautiful. Wow.

Ok so we will skip over my miserable depressing afternoon that has now caused me to have strong feelings of rage and ire. To make myself feel better I have been browsing West Elm's website so I can have an idea of what I'm going to buy myself when I am home at Easter.

I wish Josey were back from Mendoza.

I Dream of This

Foo Dog Fun

Thanks to my favorite Madame Bovary fan, Meg (revel in her amazing jewels and creations here), I have rediscovered the fun of Foo dogs. I would like two, in either grey or turquoise, and I think they would make me very happy.

Postwar Paradise - Sri Lanka

Claw-foot bathtub of my dreams. only in Sri Lanka.

I love to peruse the New York Times travel section - although I do make an honest attempt to read relevant and important World news stories, I cannot help but drown myself in the slide shows and let my wanderlust get the best of me.

I have just fallen in love with Sri Lanka. Luckily I do read The Economist and have a good idea of their former & current political debacles - it's not really the greatest place to be on Earth. But that doesn't mean that the islands aren't blessed with an incredible amount of natural beauty, beaches and claw-foot bathtubs that basically are begging for me to enjoy them.

Proof that I'm not crazy:

Could this get any better?

I will swim in the silver waters of the pristine beaches.

You'll find me poolside drinking my Bombay & tonic.

I will slumber in this little lovenest.

...And I will end my journey with a trip to this creepy antique store and fill every bag I own with goods.

Life in Pictures

Sunday strolls through the park, mini sailboat races.. and standard poodle encounters. Life in Buenos Aires couldn't be more splendid.

Another Etsy Gem

I swear Etsy is the coolest thing ever.

I love this snap of a cotton field down in Mississippi. I would love to have $2,000 laying around so I could purchase a 30x40 print but alas, such luck is not mine.

Also posting up a shot of my floral arrangements from our curry feast last week. Today I will be doing what my iGoogle horoscope demands that I do: "Tasks that require focused thinking can be challenging; don't bother trying to pay your bills today. Instead, do something artistic that will allow you to rely more on your visionary side than your rational abilities. If you have a room that needs redecorating, there's no longer any need to put off the project. But don't spend the day lost in planning, either. Instead, be creative and let your inner child out to play."

Thank you for validating my inner design guru. José is planning his trip to Mendoza for next week and today will be spent roaming around antique markets and attempting to befriend my hero of the feria - the old guy who has the most incredible & impeccable pieces, adverts from the 60s, bronze doorknockers, wooden crates that haven't got a scratch on them and would be perfect for storing my stationery and books, the most amazing seltzer bottles, the list goes on. He's kind of a mean old man but I think it adds to his charm. I always drool over his stand and I hope one day he'll say "Come hither young grasshopper, I will teach you the ways of the flea market, and I will bequeath to you all my secrets, connections and shower you with antique gifts."

I just made myself swoon.

Animal Portraits

I stumbled upon this wonderful shop on Etsy with the work of a photographer named Sharon Montrose. She photographs animals - in shelters or in animal sanctuaries - and I have to say I think they are the most adorable and awesome prints. I want this bunny (it's 1 in a series of 3) to display happily in the apartment. (or should I say hoppily?)

Thursday?

Oh the joys of unemployment. In our house we have no idea what day it is. It's truly a blissful feeling. Anyway.

Last night's Indian feast turned out to be a wonderful evening spent among the closest of friends. I spent a good 3 hours chopping and preparing everything so it wouldn't be too much of a disaster to make the final preparations once every actually arrived, and the wine drinking began promptly at 9. I was surprised at how un-spicy everything turned out (I'm praying that's not a subconscious influence of living in Argentina wearing its effect on me) but it really was a scrumptious meal! Only a little bit of potatoes and salad are left over. Victory.

I am now mesmerized - as I always am - by the Anthropologie jewelry section on their website. First of all, they now ship internationally. When I go bankrupt you will all know why. However, Anthro is sneaky and I really don't appreciate their little tool/gadget that detects what country you're in without even asking you, and THEN converting the product prices into your local currency. I do not need to know that my favorite necklace costs 1/2 of my former monthly salary. Thank you for making me feel vapid, spoiled and absolutely ridiculous. :(

Just because I like to suffer here are photos of my two favorites. I love the serpentine feeling of the Sea Ribbons necklace, and of course the bold coral beads would be the perfect complement to basic white tank top and jeans combo.

I'm Moving to Mexico ... or Austin

I am drooling over this photo of a breakfast taco served up in Austin, TX in today's New York Times. Honestly, I would give my baby toe for a delicious warm taco with mashed russet potatoes and jalapeños, with messy scrambled eggs and a little bit of chorizo thrown in there.

I chose the wrong Spanish-speaking country.

However, tonight I am going to cook a delicious Indian feast for some of our closest friends. Chicken curry with a cashew sauce, mixed veg curry, potatoes in a delicious yogurt sauce ... I will be going overboard and loving every minute of it. Already set the table, just need to get the flowers at the train station (5 pesos for that beautiful purple bouquet I posted up last week, how divine is that?) & to start chopping, pureéing, and simmering. I will be a giant curry mess and I love every minute of it.

Random note: Last night we finally watched "Twilight" (I say "finally" because I read all of the books last Fall and have to admit that I was totally sucked in and was not ashamed). Kristen Stewart could NOT be a worse actress. Lighten up lady!! She's like a miserable little growling creature who bites her lip instead of conveying actual emotion. I know my opinion doesn't mean much, and she's happily pouting all the way to the bank, but I would love to know how she managed to get where she is. Moving on.

Off to the market, pray that cilantro is easy to find.

Funny Money

A friend sent along this link to me and I just think it's utterly hilarious.

Defaced US currency. I like the Gene Simmons/Abraham Lincoln combo.

Les Must

I love these understated rings from the new Cartier Les Must line.

Have a lovely and happy day everyone.

Today's Inspiration

I love these grouped family photographs that I saw in today's New York Times Home & Garden section. I absolutely drool over antique photos that I find at flea markets and think I might start buying some and group them in a nice geometric manner.

It's a beautiful and balmy Monday in Buenos Aires. Sadly, I had been neglecting my bathroom project because last week I was a little under the weather (ripping off paper and scraping off plaster from tiles isn't the best activity when you've got a low fever and serious head congestion) and José was still in BA (had planned to go to Mendoza but didn't) so my endless bits of free time kind of went down the drain. Today I spent a good 2 hours going at it and WOW I am a master genius of destruction ! I was literally soaking wet after attacking one wall - it felt amazing. Kind of like an alternative workout.

After that we got some medialunas and had a little lunch alfresco in Plaza San Martín. Lots of pups frolicking about and lots more couples groping each other and smooching. What is it with these people? I'll never understand. I also don't get how women here wear strapless dresses to work and somehow that is considered professional. It's even less professional when you have artificial DD's protruding from your body. Le sigh.

This afternoon I'm off for a doctor's appointment and then will be planning my Indian feast that I'm preparing for friends on Wednesday. Cilantro is always an elusive ingredient in this town. Might have to take a jaunt over to the Barrio Chino to explore its fun little markets full of creepy things and handy spices.

Frustrated Pagina

It's so tough. I want so badly to pursue my dream of having a little store full of fabulous finds and precious vintage baubles, but that avenues I could use back home in the US to do so aren't really feasible from BA (ex: Etsy shop). There are so many beautiful things that I see all the time, and I would love to share them with my friends and loved ones. I can only schlep back so much - and I'm lucky if I make it home twice a year.

le sigh.

I'm conflicted. I'm not sure if you ever know exactly 100% what you want to do with your life, and how to execute it into a feasible plan. I just can't imagine even thinking about abandoning my love for beautiful objects. Flowers, seashells, old magnifying glasses, vintage hardcover books, small crystal apertif glasses ... the list goes on. I need to find an outlet for it, or I will end up with my apartment full of these goodies that I can't stop picking up!

Random Pet Peeve

I know I am not the most patient person in the world - in fact I am far from it. Something I know I need to work on but that will be saved for another day.

I just wanted to air out a little pet peeve that I have - people who are not resourceful and who are incapable of doing any simple problem solving on their own. I'm all for helping people and sharing tips and advice - that isn't what this is about. I don't understand the people who actually waste more time in asking you something and having you do all the legwork, when in reality it would be easier for them to just look it up on their own.

Let me introduce you to - Let Me Google that For You

Perhaps the greatest invention in the history of time. I am going to use it more often.

Things I Accomplished Today

-Dropped off things at the dry cleaner
-Took shoes to get repaired
-Bought groceries, which included buying food to cook tonight (gasp)
-Attempted to wash the windows in the apartment. Semi-failed.
-Ripped out ugly old curtains in the home office. I love destruction!
-Got my hair cut for the first time in almost 1 year. No mullet. Success.
-Bought amazing boots from Prune to get ready for Fall.
-Found the perfect mirror for the powder room. Handmade, etched silver.
-Pranced around with new haircut and aforementioned boots, happily.

Please Don't Get Offended

But I really, really strongly dislike when people use the word "hubby."

Just a random little thought throughout the day.
