Mmmmm

I'm counting down the days/hours/minutes/seconds until I hop on the plane to DC and my stomach is also joining me in this endeavor. Part why I love going home is because I can eat my face off and indulge in things that just don't exist in Buenos Aires. Part of me actually doesn't love it because I always end up plumper than when I arrived - not a good thing to do when you're about to get married (Seriously, pre-wedding diet? Sorry Charlie, I've got an Indian buffet to tackle. Woops.)

Here is a list of the places / things I want to eat when I am home (take note):
1. Rasika
2. Heritage
3. Raaga
4. Zaytinya
5. Pietanza
6. Every Pho place in Little Saigon
7. Chipotle
8. The taco truck in Clarendon that's in that supermarket parking lot
9. Whole Foods hot bar
10. The Diner in Adams Morgan (preferably for brunch)
11. Cork
12. Jaleo
13. Central
14. Moby Dick
15. Liberty Tavern
16. Patisserie Poupon
17. Cafe Divan
18. Thai Noy
19. Peking Gourmet
20. Mandu

ok this list could - and will - go on but it's getting depressing. If anyone wants to book a food date let me know. If not, I'll just go there alone and eat until I pass out. Sounds like a nice plan.

Portugal Photos

I love reliving our days in Portugal. If only we had taken more photos ...

Back from Hiatus !!!

Get ready for my grand return to the world of quasi-interesting blogging. Hooray!!

The wedding was amazing. Perfection and so much fun. I can't wait to post the pictures - Unfortunately we are going to have to wait a little while longer for the professional shots by Leo Patrone (here is the link to his blog for eye candy of other people's weddings), but we do have some amateur snaps from friends and family.

Will also be doing a redux of our honeymoon. I had the most wonderful time, really. Our favorite spot by far was Portugal - Lisbon & the Algarve. I can't wait to post those pictures !!!!!!

I went on a walk

sunrise from the dining room - I was up earrrrrrly today

My flight was canceled. I don't really want to talk about it. I'm bummed. One more night in BA is fine with me, but since José has to leave on a trip for work tomorrow that means all day killing time, alone, WITH the cleaning lady (which makes me feel worse about planning to watch reality tv on the couch all day, feeling sorry for myself) ... It's not the most fun of prospects. Plus everything is already packed! And I realllly don't want to take anything out of my suitcases. I'm stubborn like that.

So, in an attempt to make me feel better José made me go for a walk around the neighborhood. I admit, it did help. He's always right about things like that. We found some fun little shops and walked down streets that I almost never encounter on my daily routine. It was fun. I took some pictures so here they are. Direct result of bad moods. I guess it isn't all negative.

The big book sculpture is Marta Minujín's Tower of Babel that she built in honor of Buenos Aires's being the international capital of books this year. She's wacky and wild and I love her. The tower is cool - I love spirals - and it's even better that it's 1/2 block away from our apartment. Weeeeee.

Tum ti tum

Today was rather productive. It's really been a nice weekend, although you know when you feel that pressure of "ok, I have 2 days until ____ (usually leaving on a trip, moving away, whatever) so I have to do 1,000 cool things/see everyone I know/be fabulous/look good while doing it" seems to pop up? Well, yeah. It's Sunday evening and I guess I hadn't planned on being so mired down in practical errands these days. Definitely for the best though - last weekend was more than enough fun and I want to get some rest in while I can before the crazystorm of weddingland hits. Yay!!!

I'm going to be gone for a whopping 6 weeks, folks. Yep! Kind of nuts. Maybe it's 5 but I think it's 6. Doesn't really matter. Try packing for that!! I'm the worst packer ever, consistently referencing George Costanza as my doppleganger (dressing according to mood/bringing 3 bags for a weekend trip). But the last thing I want is to be schlepping around 100lbs of luggage across Europe, cursing my lack of foresight (I plan on doing some shopping as part of furthering my cultural education).

Somehow I managed to select some key pieces from my wardrobe without just pulling everything off the shelves and hangers as I'm prone to do. Hooray! I think I'll be great. The hardest part for me is the shoe element, though I practiced some serious restraint in hopes of sprucing up my collection via travel. And we all know how much shoes weigh. They also take up way too much room in a suitcase. Darn.

I finally finished my article - I act as if it were 15,000 words. Try 800. Whatever. It's hard to focus when I've got so much going on, like whether to watch "Keeping up with the Kardashians" or "Jerseylicious." But really, sometimes that final push is the hardest one to give.

Josey will be coming up to DC about a week after I arrive. Hopefully the sun will be out and we can give our tans a boost since I'm really not planning on being a ghastly pale bride. I'd also like a machine to exist that can tone every muscle in my body in less than 3 weeks. That would just be excellent. There is still lots to do in terms of tying up loose ends before the wedding, but it will be fun to do that in person finally! It's going to be great.

Hmm.. What else? I got another plant. Yep. A Chinese Ornamental hot pepper plantita that has these little multi-colored pepper babies that are purple, orange, red and cream. I hope our cleaning lady doesn't kill it when we're gone. I've already drafted up a "Plant Care" list for her - it's a big job to keep my green friends happy!!

I think that's all. I'm sad Nadal lost in Rome today. Djokovic is amazing, and I love his temper tantrums, but I'm loyal to the Spaniard through and through. Now I'm listening to Jose do sudoku on the iPad while we wait for the next episode of House to download.

Happy Sunday ...

In the land of Kings

Thank God for Anthropologie. Unfortunately I've just been scratching my eyes out as I've been drooling over their newest catalog shot in Rajasthan ... Not only does it make me want to be whisked off to India but it also has planted a serious seed of "I WANT" in my little brain!

Sometimes I wonder if I'm so eager to move back to America not for the proximity to family and friends, not for the reliability ... perhaps it's because I would then have total liberty to style our home in Anthro. I've managed to smuggle down quite a few items - Octopus plates, adorable planters (engagement gifts. Love them), an octopus pillow, a beautifully illustrated book with seashell & botanical prints ... But it's not the same. I'd like to go all-out please (Sorry, José).

Here are some shots (click to enlarge) from the catalog that made me squeal with delight. Thankfully I will be in Anthrolandia in just a few days!

Redmere is hot

My sis is pretty damn cool. She does fancy pants things with the art world and is always traveling somewhere neato (Turkey, Bilbao ... next up Hong Kong). She's the one in charge of dealing with the press and media coverage for really interesting exhibits/shows/etc. Michael Landy's "Art Bin" (one of my favorites) was her project and now she's headed up Weiwei's bronze Zodiac animal head sculptures at Somerset House. I la her! She's so amazing and talented and works her booty off. She's also the best long-distance Maid of Honor of all time. Yep, I'm giving her that award.

She'll probably get mad that I'm posting this picture of her but I think she looks fabulous.

The Meal of a Lifetime

There are no words to describe how anxious I am to see the No Reservations episode of Tony's meal at El Bulli. None. I pored over every image he and Chef José Andrés tweeted during their trip to Barcelona and the subsequent time they spent in Ferran Adriá's lair. It was incredible. Pure and unadulterated lust for food, for innovation and for life. Nothing makes me sadder than to know that I will never be able to enjoy a meal there, as it closes its doors as a restaurant for good as of July 30th this year.

After waking up feeling more sluggish than ever (I blame multiple cocktails and an insanely lengthy and scrumptious dinner at Sipan Palermo last night), I was able to overcome the decidedly gray and miserable day with Tony's blog post about his experience at El Bulli and the episode we can all expect to be the greatest ever.

Here is the link - Read it
. You will want to crawl through the screen, immerse yourself in the uber personal photos and drool over the 50-course menu that was designed specifically for Tony and José. It's just perfection.

for 91 days

I read about this incredible duo in the Argentina Independent - I always find fun little bits of information, interesting people, and intriguing analysis of what's going on in and around Argentina there - and thought I'd do a little blurb of my own about the project. It's called For 91 Days and this couple moves around from city to city, spending exactly 91 days in each (that works out to 4 cities a year). So far they've been in Berlin, Valencia, Savannah.... They're in Buenos Aires now and are heading north to somewhere in Bolivia for their next stop. It's a really cool interview and their blog (link!) is a fun way to take an internet break (or just procrastinate entirely). I love their current post about Belgrano "R" which is, hands-down, one of my most favoooorite neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. (photo taken from that post - there are so many more on the site! GO! NOW!)

24 March 2011

where to begin?

Well, I'm back and at least the weather is better than it was yesterday. Actually the rain and gloom were perfect for a sleepy arrival, a much-needed nap, and general post-trip laziness. Today's beaming sunshine would have been lost on me in my altered mental state yesterday.

We had a great dinner at Bengal and I slept like a little lamb (although I did miss my little lamb Bella, keeping my feet warm and snoring/dreaming in weird ways). Today I continued my cleaning spree - I have bursts of rage where I want to throw everything away and/or snap my fingers and have the Container Store at my disposition - and we ran some errands before having a nice al fresco lunch and a good long run at the lakes in Palermo. Too bad I hate children, especially children whose parents let them do whatever they want (read: roller skate in zig-zags, stop suddenly in the middle of the sidewalk, wreak general havoc and not understand why it's nearly impossible for me not to run them over). It was a good run but not a relaxing one. We're already trying to figure out a way to avoid these issues in the future (key: don't go at 3 pm on a holiday when everyone and their mom is out at the park. Oops).

I just watched a classic ep of 90210 (Will Kelly die in the Holiday Rave housefire? Stay tuned next week to find out!) and now José is slumbering. I was tired but my mind is racing, mainly because I can't seem to move beyond some disappointing news that I got yesterday once I was back home.

I had mentioned a week or so ago that I had some exciting new developments/news to share, and that no matter what the outcome I'd keep you posted on what was happening. Well, in a whirlwind span of less than 2 weeks I ended up being 1 of 2 people considered for a job with a very big, very cool, very amazeballs company (with the position being in Boston). I still kind of feel like it was as blur but things seemed to be progressing really well, despite the odds (who ever thinks they will be "chosen" by a company such as this one to at least have a face-to-face interview?! Not me). After what were some successful early round interviews I ended up going to Boston to meet with the team for I guess what could be considered as a final interview. It went really well and I felt very comfortable with the people I met - not to mention that I really was head over heels for the job and its description. It seemed to fit me to a tee, no joke.

Mum was the word and I am glad I found out once back in BA what the verdict was. Sadly, the other candidate was just plain stronger than I was and I didn't get the job. Tears and disappointment ensued. While I was trying hard not to get ahead of myself, I couldn't help but think about how lovely it would have been to be back in the US ... close to friends and family, with the familiar comforts of my former home, with an amazing job that would be putting me on an even more amazing career path. Le sigh.

It's probably for the best - especially since in the next 8 weeks we're getting married! an international move across the continents probably wouldn't be the most relaxing thing in the world - but it still hurts. It feels like coming back to square one and having nothing to show for it. I actually likened it to what a one-night stand must feel like. You give your all and then... thanks for trying. Please come back another time. Kind of a bummer.

Not the end of the world - I have so much to be happy about and to be excited for. That goes without saying. But I guess after stressing so much the past year over what direction I'm headed in, I was really hoping for a little intervention from the friendly job gods to make it that much easier for me.

Looks like I'll be digging into my creative bag and trying to wrangle out some cool opportunities for me while I'm still here. I'm definitely going to take advantage of this free time and hit the books. I need to study something - my brain is going nuts and I know it will help me expand on my already motley contact base here.

Hopefully something even better will present itself soon ... But preferably after June 21 :)

How Fast Can You Have Your Bags Packed for Milan?

Although instead of Milan I'm headed to DC! Weeeeeeee!

Just finished a pretty successful packing sesh upstairs. It's humid and rainy today, so I broke a serious sweat, which is just sad. Part of that is due to the fact that our bags are stored under the bed (which is actually bigger than California king), and I always have to lift the frame up to un-stick my gigantic bags. Yikes. As usual, I probably overpacked but given that one day it snows and the next day it's sunny and balmy, I feel like I need to be prepared for all seasons. I think as long as I don't accumulate too much stuff once I'm home (a mission that I know will fail), I'll be fine. Looks like I should take another gander at what I put in the suitcases ...

Being home is always a treat, and I am so excited to see my Bella and to eat Indian to my heart's content. The sad part is leaving Josey and our happy life in Buenos Aires. Happy Hours at Danzón, dinners at Bengal, eating lentils on the couch while watching The Dog Whisperer (clearly my fave show), going to the gym to burn off the wine + caipiroskas ... They're all such fun little parts of my days and weeks that make my life here so happy. The upside to my long absence is that I'm doing it to put the finishing touches on the wedding - getting ready for us to spend the rest of our lives together! Yipee! So that is a good thing. And Josey I'm sure will be enjoying the silence since I chatter his ear off all day, every day (He works out of the house and we share the office -- HELLO distraction!)

So ... what else? Oh, I love how this drama between the US and Argentina is unfolding over the "contraband" that the US Air Force is "attempting to smuggle" into Argentina. Not sure how much of a news item it is back home, but here we're all up in arms over the plane that was detained in Ezeiza for days and has now caused a diplomatic rift between the two countries. Basically the US Air Force was bringing down pre-approved items to be used in training sessions with the police for hostage situations. These items included emergency first-aid kits (which include small vials of morphine), a rifle or two, and GPS thingies that were all obviously meant to be part of exercises. Mind you, the US has paperwork signed by the Argies saying they are OK with what will be brought in. Flash forward to their deciding to say that the US snuck in "drugs, weapons, and spy technology" in what they made out to be large amounts. Yeah, ok. The irony of it all? The Argentine Air Force is about to be in big trouble as details of a huge drug ring are unfolding -- it has been discovered that the thousands of kilograms of cocaine that the Juliá brothers tried to bring into Spain on their private jet were, in fact, loaded at the local Air Force base located in Morón.

That's enough for my rant. See you on the flip side!
